Homes
February 2025
Homes was a meditation on mythologies indigenous to Canada and ones I grew up with in Europe. Exploring Vancouver and its surroundings, I was floored by its imminent beauty. You observe and connect with the land, and it connects back to you with the stories it holds. Whilst thinking about those stories and exploring the area, similarities kept popping up between them and Celtic mythology, between North American politics and history, and Europe’s. Homes was an attempt to pull these elements together in a way that felt symbolic of the collection of knowledge that constitutes the psyche/universe connection. I used wood and non-toxic stain to make the carvings, emulating primitive art works and writings found across the globe, whilst ensuring I would leave no damaging footprint.
After its installation, Homes was left to the weather to be reclaimed by the land it was left on - the unceded territory of the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh peoples: lands I have been incredibly privileged to live, learn, and create upon, that have had a profound impact on my life and my practice, that will continue to affect me for years to come.
